SFG Team Antics
1 March 2010
The Scouting for Girls (SFG) team suffered a major set back during their first team building event. Early December 2009 saw the mighty Barbarians take on the undefeated touring All Blacks. The full SFG team were there to watch the match at Twickenham and also visited a few Richmond ale houses after the game. Using triathlon terminology two of the team decided to “go long” resulting in late night drink / dance shenanigans. Performing a dance move actually banned in over 40 countries under a UN resolution our stalwart marathon running team ale specialist Danny hit the deck with a sickening thud and a wrecked knee. A fall on the ice a month later pretty much sealed Danny’s decision to pull out of the Mountain Triathlon. A few months have passed and SFG have managed to secure the services of none other than the fabulous Shirley Pim who will take Danny’s place in the team. A seasoned adventure racer she has completed the Dorset coast to coast race involving, running, kayaking, cycling and bivouacking out over night on Dartmoor. The male members of the SFG team are actually in fear of the event now, not because of the physical challenge but because of the fearsome pace that Shirley will demand of her team.
In training Steve journeyed to the Lake District, climbed Hellvelyn, looked down onto Ullswater and was quoted as saying “Oh my gosh that looks quite a considerable distance to travel in a canoe…” or words to that effect. Dave showed up for a duathlon, (4km run, 28km bike, 7km run) and then feigned disappointment when it was cancelled due to ice on the road. At the time of writing Al has been running a few times but is relying on his ability to dig all day non-stop to get the whole team speedily through the canoe stage.
From a shaky start SFG are back in the room, looking scarily competitive and now focusing on sponsorship in order to make the sweat, blood and tears all worth it on the day.
