Inspiration from the Almighty & Mr Bond
22 February 2010
We were team #7 on the original entry list but willing and able to take the point position for the team reports and head into the event as the number 1 team. From the sofa in front of the fire with wine to hand its easy to talk the talk and ignorance is bliss…
I was recently talking to an athletic friend about the triathlon who said he knew the lake and wouldn’t really fancy paddling a canoe that distance and had taken a pleasant boat trip on it. Its things like this that you have to shut out as a focussed athlete / deluded triathlon virgin and maintain the belief that it will all be fine. Indeed it will be better than fine, this has the makings of an epic and enjoyable event that will be closer to heaven than hell. By naming our team 007 Heaven we are drawing on inspiration from the Almighty and Mr Bond, a formiddable combination!
As a team we are getting down to the important aspects of picking our team shirts and the embroidery which should adorn them, Mr Bond would approve. Toby is using contacts from his rowing club (note the rowing could be an asset) to kit us out. Toby’s rowing skills could prove a good replacement for Emmanuel, our former French ironman expert team mate who I was hoping would carry our team to glory but has fallen by the wayside. No matter, we have a well balanced team who are yet to meet up and realise the mountain we have to climb together.
So in order to prepare for the event we are about to embark on a team training weekend matched closely to the terrain we will encounter and have chosen Poole. I offered a chance to come to Cornwall and join me in tackling Brown Willy (dubiously named Cornish peak) but Rob Lear’s offer to look after us in Dorset has won us over. So by next weekend we will have paddled, pounded and cycled and certainly spent time in the pub talking about it and posing in our kit and planning fundraising schemes.
As team leader I am happy, Angela is reassuring me with her ficticious training regime and will be fine if she can stop her husband driving over her bike again, Rob is hosting us for our first get together so can do no wrong yet and Toby can row and sort out the kit, so far so good. We are going to be a hard team to beat but easy to have some fun with along the way.
See you all there,
