10 Teams Take Up The Challenge
10 November 2009
The expectation was for about 20 foolish souls to volunteer to undertake the mountain triathlon. The response was double this and due to the enthusiasm of the Sophie’s Legacy team the event has been re-organised to accommodate the extra numbers.
On 20th May 2010 10 teams of 4, each containing at least one female athlete (I think!) will line up to race 53Km through the Lake District. The course will include a 12Km canoe paddle on Ullswater and the ascent of Helvelyn on foot followed by 30Km of mixed terrain mountain biking.
This year the Sophie’s Legacy challenge is very different to the 2009 marathon in Rome. 2010 will see a bespoke event pitting teams against each other. The focus will be more on a combined fundraising mentality based around a fun but competitive day.
Going into the race there are obvious differences in the approach. There are those who are determined to win and those who will be proud to complete. Below are a selection of responses to the call for participants:
“Count me in! Maybe I can perform better than Rome, but I doubt it”.
“No problem this looks fun”
“I am very keen”
“I may not be the fastest but I’ll bring a lot of enthusiasm !!! Can’t Wait!”
“I must be mad”
“Having looked at the OS map of the area it looks like a spirograph!!”
Details of the teams and their aspirations can be found at the following link.

The target is to raise 40,000 for Sophie’s Charities, Prospect & Macmillan, so that they can continue the remarkable work that they do in supporting cancer sufferers and their families. In addition this year we will also be supporting NWCRF. You can read about these charities and the work that they do by following the links to the related pages on this website.
