About the event
The “mountain triathlon” will be run as a team event, pitching mixed gender teams of 4 against each other in a time trial format. Owing to the number of teams the order of events may differ for the teams but all will complete the three disciplines with brief breaks between stages to eat, drink and change equipment.
Paddling – Teams will paddle a craft constructed of two canoes lashed together to form a catamaran. With two team members in each side the teams will paddle a 12Km route on Ullswater. I have it on good authority that unlike the other sections of the challenge this part involves limited ascents and descents.
Hike – The hike will take each team on a circular ascent of Helvelyn. The peak is 970m and is the third highest point in England. Starting from the lake shore at an altitude 145m the route will return you to the start point 12km later
Cycle – As with the hike the cycle route is circular starting and finishing at the event base in Patterdale. The route will be of mixed terrain, partly on tracks partly on roads. The total distance will be 29Km incorporating plenty of hills.
Each stage will be timed. The clock will be stopped as the last member of the team crosses the finish. The cumulated times for the three stages will decide the overall winners.
Team Profiles
10 teams will line up on the shores of Ullswater soon after dawn on Thursday 20th May. For some the day ahead will be one of the toughest of their lives for others it will be a unique team experience, for all it will be an enormously rewarding day raising money for essential charity work in the name of Sophie.
