North West Cancer Research Fund
North West Cancer Research Fund (NWCRF) is a regional independent charity dedicated to research into the causes of cancer, how it develops and spreads, and also ways of providing better diagnoses and treatment.
Every year NWCRF makes up to £1m available to fund groundbreaking cancer research programmes in the North West of England at Bangor University, Lancaster University and the University of Liverpool.
Sophie’s Legacy will be supporting NWCRF in 2010. Our mountain triathlon challenge across the Lake District will provide an invaluable opportunity for NWCRF to generate support from the Northwest communities supporting the event.
This year, NWCRF has announced that they will be funding a three year research project into the role of key proteins in the metastasis of ovarian cancer.
Although a departure from our support of palliative care organisations, being able to contribute to the funding of this project is something that all those involved in Sophie’s Legacy aspire to.
As with so many ovarian cancer sufferers Sophie’s disease was not detected until after metastasis. With a better knowledge of this aspect of tumour biology, detection may be possible at an earlier stage and as a consequence survival rates would be improved significantly. This is a gift that we all hope to be able to give future sufferers.

Dr Daimark Bennett, will be leading the ovarian cancer research programme at the University of Liverpool. The three year project will be granted funds on an annual basis and we hope to be able to make a significant contribution to NWCRF during this time.
